There are at least four major ways of estimating how many households there are in England. Each has strengths and weaknesses.

• The annual population survey (APS) surveys around 170,000 households per year. The ONS use this to estimate the number of households in the local authorities of England.
• The labour force survey (LFS) surveys around 40,000 households per quarter. The ONS use this to estimate the number of households in the regions of England.
• The household projections for England table by the ONS brings together multiple sources of population data and a model of household formation to estimate the number of households in the local authorities of England.
• The now superceded yet often more reasonable household projections for England table 406 by DCLG which brings together multiple sources of population data and a model of household formation to estimate the number of households in the local authorities of England.

These different sources give us similar but different estimates. The true number of households in England is unknown.
